First John 1.5-2.2: The Power of Light

Posted on October 4, 2015

Main Idea: Right believing means right living.

  • What are some of the common practices that you see today that reflect “walking in the darkness” that John is talking about?

  • What does “walking in the light” look like in your life?

  • If we are always forgiven of our sin, why is ongoing repentance important to our relationship with God?

  • Christian leader and author John Stott once said, “Before we can begin to see the cross as something done for us…, we have to see it as something done by us.”  How does this quote highlight the truth that John is sharing with the churches in this passage of First John?

  • Read Psalm 32, written by King David.

    • Who are the ones considered “blessed”?

    • What effect did silence have on the heart and mind of David?

    • What effect did confession have on the heart and mind of David?

    • What areas in your life are you holding silent before God that you need to confess for forgiveness and counsel before God?

Practice: Read through Psalm 32 every day this week.  Make it the prayer of your heart for clean hands and a righteous heart before God, to do his work in obedience.
