First John 2.3-14: A Fork in the Road

Posted on October 11, 2015

Main Idea: Followers of Christ walk the path of truth, light, and love.

  • So far in First John, what are all the ways that John has told us that we can be certain we know Jesus?

  • How does John connect love and obedience?  What does connecting that in your life look like?

  • How does hatred hurt our ability to “see” (v. 11)?  What effect does that have on our relationship with others?

  • In what ways has obeying God’s commands strengthened your faith in him?

  • Read John 14:23-31, Jesus speaking to his disciples.

    • What are the similarities you notice between what Jesus says in this passage and what John is teaching in First John?

    • How is the “Advocate” in this passage different than the one mentioned in First John?

    • What role does the Holy Spirit play in obedience?

    • What is the peace that Jesus leaves with us?  How have you, or haven’t you, been living in the peace of Christ?

Practice: Seek to imitate Jesus in your relationship with one person this week.
