First John 4.7-21: The Power of Love

Posted on November 8, 2015

Main Idea: Godly love is difficult; yet through it, we reveal God to others.

  • In what ways is God’s demonstration of love in Jesus Christ different from human emotions associated with love?  Are there ways that its similar?

  • In what ways is love portrayed in our culture?  How does it compare with Christ-like love?

  • What does John saying is the connection between loving God and loving others?  Can you truly do one without the other?  Why or why not?

  • How has the reality of God’s love affected the way you view his expectation that you obey him?

  • Read Romans 5:1-11 and think about the following questions:

    • Because of Jesus’ work on the cross, what are all the different things we can boast about? (confident and unashamed)

    • What words does Paul use to describe our condition before knowing Christ?

    • What are we like after the love of Christ has been poured out on us?

Practice:  We all have people in our lives who challenge us in our love.  To whom do you need to work at showing Christ-like love this week?  What steps will you take to repent of bad behavior and embrace love of others?
